POSTDOCTORAL SCIENTIST


The Shahmoradian lab at the UT Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center O’Donnell Brain Institute, Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases in Dallas, Texas, is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Scientist to apply cellular structural biology techniques and complementary methods to investigate the macromolecular basis of protein aggregation and membrane remodelling in neurons and mammalian tissues.

Main methods are cryo-focused ion beam specimen preparations, cryo-electron tomography and 3D processing/sub-tomogram averaging, together with correlative light/electron microscopy and optogenetics/advanced labeling approaches.

Requirements: 

  • Ph.D. in life science or engineering (or due to complete within 6 months)
  • Demonstrated ability to have worked independently and in a team
  • Track record with original contributions
  • Prior experience with successfully operating high-tech microscopy instrumentation and computational processing techniques
  • Programming and machine learning experience is a plus

  • Talos Arctica cryo-electron microscope with K3 direct electron detector and Volta phase plate

  • Custom-engineered, super-resolution, light-sheet and cleared tissue microscopes
  • UTSW Whole Brain Microscopy Facility with several high-throughput microscopes including two state-of-the-art multi-photon microscopes with integrated precision vibratomes
  • UTSW Green Center for Systems Biology with ~25 isolated microscope development bays equipped with optical tables

UTSW Department of Bioinformatics with BioHPC, ahigh-performance computing and storage facility equipped with ~1000 CPU and~120 GPU nodes connected to 50 PB of storage for in-house data analysis (Allinstruments have direct mounts to this computing infrastructure)
